Women with very large breasts may experience numerous problems
due to the excessive weight of the breasts. These symptoms may
include neck and back pain, deep shoulder strap grooving from
a brassiere, and skin irritation. Additionally, the person may
be overly self-conscious about her appearance.
Breast reduction offers patients smaller, lighter,
more femininely-shaped breasts. The procedure commences with
the placement of an incision along the bottom of the areola,
usually extending down toward the fold beneath the breast.
Excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed, the nipple adjusted
accordingly, and the remaining skin repositioned to complete
the improved breast shape. The result is a more feminine contour
and profile, improved health, and more positive self image.
Breast reduction may be performed on an out or inpatient
basis, usually under general anesthesia or local with sedation.
In some cases, a portion of the procedure may be covered
by insurance. This should be discussed with your insurance
provider and the doctor.
